Location
The tanner and monastery town in Lower Lusatia
Doberlug was first mentioned in writing over 1,000 years ago. In the Middle Ages, the town became famous for the Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, which is the oldest between the Elbe and Oder rivers. As the tanning trade flourished, Kirchhain became one of the most important production locations for sheep leather in Germany. The White Tanning Museum, which is unique in Europe, is a reminder of the local history of leather production.
In 1992, the municipality of Doberlug-Kirchhain was created in the district of Elbe-Elster. The districts of Arenzhain, Buchhain, Dübrichen, Frankena, Hennersdorf, Lugau, Nexdorf, Prießen, Trebbus, Lichtena and Werenzhain were added to the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain in 2001 as part of the local government reform.
The town's sights include the magnificent monastery church, the parish church, the newly renovated Renaissance castle, the town hall and the Kursächsische Postmeilensäule. With a total area of 148.94 km2, the town has 9,000 inhabitants.
The town has good connections to the federal highways B87, B96, B101, to the highway A13 in the direction of Berlin-Dresden and the railroad lines Berlin - Doberlug-Kirchhain - Dresden and Cottbus - Doberlug-Kirchhain - Leipzig. The airports of Berlin Schönefeld, Dresden and Halle/Leipzig can be reached in approx. 90-120 km.
