Location
The "Sonnenberg" district is a traditional working-class neighborhood from the Wilhelminian era. It is located close to Chemnitz city center and the main train station and today has a population of around 14,000. The northern part of Sonnenberg has been a redevelopment area since 1991 and has experienced a real building boom since then. From Körnerplatz with St. Mark's Church to Lessingplatz, the district with its still closed Wilhelminian-style building structures has now been almost completely redeveloped. The southern area of Sonnenberg has also been included in the redevelopment funding since 2008. Positive factors in the area include the well-developed social infrastructure, such as pre-school facilities, schools, youth welfare facilities and support for migrants and families. The Sonnenberg district, which was originally dominated by craft businesses and trade, is now a popular residential area with a diverse infrastructure and newly designed open spaces.
