Lindlar is a municipality in the west of the Oberbergisch district in North Rhine-Westphalia, around 30 kilometers east of Cologne. The municipality has around 22,000 inhabitants and stretches from Hohkeppel and Schmitzhöhe in the southwest to Hartegasse and Breun in the northeast. The main town of Lindlar has continued to expand over the last few decades. The area now extends from Falkenhof and Oberheiligenhoven in the west via Altenlinde and Schwarzenbach in the north, Pinnappel and Weyer in the east to Schümmerich and Altenrath in the south. Neighboring towns are Gummersbach, Wipperfürth and Overath, the neighboring municipalities are Engelskirchen, Marienheide and Kürten. Lindlar has a cultural center with over 800 seats, where theater and music events take place regularly.

The municipality describes itself as a tourist community and sees itself as a vacation and leisure resort. Flea markets, craft markets, farmers' markets in the Bergisches Freilichtmuseum and a Christmas market are held regularly.

Lindlar is one of the few municipalities to have its own leisure park. It borders directly on the Heiligenhoven Castle Park and the Lindlar Cultural Center. The municipality has seven sports fields, a stadium with a grass pitch and one with artificial turf and a tartan track, which was thoroughly modernized in 2008, seven gymnasiums, including two large triple gyms and a gymnastics hall, as well as an archery range set up independently by the club above the sports field and four tennis courts.
Lindlar also has an indoor swimming pool with a large water slide, wellness area and sunbathing and sports lawn, riding arenas, a golf course, several shooting ranges and bowling alleys. Gliding can be practiced at the Lindlar airfield. Lindlar has around 200 km of marked circular hiking trails. Some of the roads have separate cycle paths. Cyclists mainly use the forest and agricultural paths.
Lindlar is connected to the highway network via the A4 federal highway (Cologne-Olpe).
The most convenient access is via the Engelskirchen or Overath-Untereschbach junctions. The nearest train station in operation is in Engelskirchen on the Oberbergische Bahn from Cologne to Lüdenscheid. There are three industrial areas in Lindlar: Klause, as well as Hommerich and Kaiserau.

The quietly situated village (approx. 380 inhabitants) is mainly characterized by residential development with detached single houses.
