Pinneberg is essentially located between the federal highway 23 with three junctions in the east and the state road 103 in the west.
Since the 1970s, a western bypass has been planned in Pinneberg to connect the highway with the L 103 and thus relieve the town. The first section has already been realized under the name "Westring". Construction of the two remaining sections began in 2015 and were opened to the public on September 29, 2019 under the name "Western Bypass".
Pinneberg is crossed by the Hamburg-Altona-Kiel railroad line, which was built by the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft - the first Danish railroad.
Pinneberg station is located in the center of the town, where regional trains from Hamburg-Altona and Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof stop via Elmshorn to Itzehoe and Wrist. Since a timetable change, however, most RegionalExpress trains to Husum and Sylt as well as to Neumünster, Flensburg and the state capital Kiel run through without stopping.
The S3 of the Hamburg S-Bahn also ends in Pinneberg. The station building, which dates back to 1844, is the oldest station building still standing in Schleswig-Holstein. Since the end of 2018, it has been thoroughly renovated and a new pedestrian tunnel has been built so that passengers no longer have to walk across the S-Bahn platform to the northern line.
Another S-Bahn station is located in the district of Thesdorf. It has a large Park+Ride parking lot, which is used by many passengers from the Pinneberg district (e.g. from Tornesch and Barmstedt outside the greater Hamburg transport network area).
Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) operates several bus routes in Pinneberg and the surrounding area within the Hamburg public transport network (HVV)
