Information about Unkel and the surrounding area
The red wine and cultural town of Unkel has an urban area of 8.16 square kilometers, is a municipality with approx. 5250 inhabitants, is located on the eastern bank of the Rhine in the northernmost tip of Rhineland-Palatinate and on the edge of the Siebengebirge, directly on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia.
Places of interest: The most important monument is the Freiligrathhaus on the Rhine promenade, a baroque aristocratic palace dating from 1760, in whose attic storey the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath lived from 1839 to 1841. The Catholic church of St. Pantaleon with its baroque high altar has a Romanesque tower and three parallel gabled roofs, giving it a charming appearance. It houses a wooden reliquary with tempera paintings depicting the life of St. Pantaleon. Large parts of the city wall and the two corner towers (with later alterations) are still preserved. Ludwig von Beethoven is said to have spent a night in the prison tower, but there is no proof of this. Since 1986, the tower has housed a museum, which is open to visitors on request.
Nearby is the Drachenfels with its small castle, as well as the Petersberg.
The town is steeped in history and has a Deutsche Bahn connection, various shopping facilities such as the discount stores Aldi and Lidl, as well as 4 bakeries/coffee shops, a large shopping center (Vorteilcenter) and, of course, pharmacies and various doctors' surgeries.
There are 2 kindergartens, an elementary school and a Realschule-Plus.
Further stores or secondary schools can be found in Linz, 5 km away, or in Bad Honnef, 4 km away. These nearby larger towns have further shopping facilities, a train connection and a wide range of schools and cultural activities.
Neuwied can be reached via the B42 in around 20 minutes and Koblenz in 40 minutes.
In the other direction, you can reach Bonn or Cologne in around 20 and 40 minutes respectively.
