Steinau an der Straße is located in the Main-Kinzig district in the south-east of the state of Hesse. The addition "an der Straße" refers to the Via Regia, the old trade route from Frankfurt am Main to Leipzig, and serves to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. Steinau is also known as the Brothers Grimm town because they spent part of their youth here.

Steinau is nestled in the Kinzig valley on the Kinzig river between the Spessart in the south and the Vogelsberg in the north at an altitude of 175 m above sea level, about 6.5 km southwest of Schlüchtern.

The location between the Spessart and its sandstone formations and the volcanic Vogelsberg with its fertile weathered soils divides the district of Steinau: in the south it is characterized by forests and in the north by agriculture.

One of the two stalactite caves in Hesse, the Devil's Cave, is located to the north of Steinau town center. The cave, which is around 2.5 million years old, was opened up in 1905. Its large karst cavity in the lower shell limestone makes it an important natural geological monument.

Steinau borders the municipality of Freiensteinau (Vogelsberg district), the municipalities of Neuhof and Flieden (both in the district of Fulda) to the north, the town of Schlüchtern to the east, the municipality-free area of Gutsbezirk Spessart, which surrounds the district of Marjoß, to the south and the town of Bad Soden-Salmünster and the municipality of Birstein to the west.

Steinau consists of the districts of Bellings, Hintersteinau, Marborn, Marjoß, Neustall, Sarrod, Rabenstein, Rebsdorf, Seidenroth, the core town of Steinau, Uerzell (with the settlement of Klesberg) and Ulmbach.

Steinau's economy is dominated by companies in the rubber and plastics, chemicals, electrical engineering, wood processing and mechanical engineering sectors. Tourism is also of economic importance; around 10,000 overnight stays are registered every year. The Ulmbach district is a state-recognized health resort.

Today, the BAB 66 replaces the medieval Via Regia as a long-distance road link through the Kinzig valley from Frankfurt to the east.

The Kinzigtalbahn railroad runs through Steinau an der Straße. Regional express trains to Fulda and Frankfurt am Main stop every hour.
