Alfeld is designated as a medium-sized center. The market area of Alfeld is roughly equidistant between the regional centers of Göttingen and Hanover and has a total population of around 80,000.
Alfeld is a business location with global connections. The economy is characterized by medium-sized companies that are active in areas such as mechanical and plant engineering, laser technology, telecommunications, mould making, powder coating, alternative energies, etc. The largest employer in the town is SAPPI Alfeld GmbH, a paper manufacturing company with around 800 employees that produces highly specialized papers.
In terms of gastronomy, the historic old town is home to businesses that offer everything that makes up modern gastronomy: German and international cuisine, cozy to cult pubs, cafés and ice cream parlors and cozy beer gardens and terraces. The same applies to some of Alfeld's districts, which have inns and hotels in scenic locations that invite you to stay and relax.
The Fagus factory deserves a special mention. Built between 1910 and 1915 to designs by Walter Gropius, this building is considered a pioneering work of modern architecture and the first industrial building of the modern era. The Fagus Factory was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
