Location
The municipality of Elz, which has a population of around 8,000, is located in the Limburg-Weilburg district of central Hesse on the border with the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Elz borders the municipality of Hundsangen (in the Westerwald district of Rhineland-Palatinate) and the town of Hadamar to the north, the town of Limburg (both in the Limburg-Weilburg district) to the east and south, and the municipalities of Hambach (in the Rhine-Lahn district of Rhineland-Palatinate), Görgeshausen, Niedererbach and Obererbach (all three in the Westerwald district) to the west.
The district of Elz is the second largest settlement in the district of Limburg-Weilburg after the core town of Limburg an der Lahn and was for a long time the largest municipality in Hesse that was not a town in the municipal sense.
