The Jonakirche is located at Quedlinburger Weg 1 in the Blumenau district of Mannheim - a quiet, mature residential area with a well-kept neighborhood and good public transport connections. Embedded in green residential streets and surrounded by detached houses and gardens, the church is centrally located yet secluded. The Jonakirche was built between 1960 and 1962 to a design by architect Helmut Striffler - a now recognized example of modernism in post-war religious buildings. Even from the outside, the building impresses with its gently sloping, widely overhanging tent roof, which seems to float elegantly over the simple church building. This unusual roof shape lends the church a sense of lightness and openness without compromising on structural clarity. The minimalist façade with light-colored plaster and exposed concrete has a graphic, almost sculptural effect. A free-standing bell girder in a filigree design discreetly complements the ensemble and underlines the modern character of the complex.

The real special feature, however, lies in the floor plan and the effect of the interior. The church is designed in the shape of a stylized fish - one of the oldest Christian symbols - which gives the building a subtle organic dynamic. Inside, a bright, wide space opens up, characterized by calm geometry, fine light axes and deliberate restraint. Vertical bands of windows along the side walls allow daylight to enter softly and create a calm, almost meditative interplay of light and shadow. The chancel is accentuated by a large, intensely colored mural by Gerhard Dreher, while a powerfully crafted crucifix by Fritz Wiedemann further intensifies the spiritual depth of the space.

The volume of the church is impressive. The main room is complemented by adjoining parish rooms, which were extended in 1997 in accordance with the preservation order. The entire complex thus offers a wide range of possibilities - whether for ecclesiastical, cultural or new community-oriented usage concepts.

The Jonakirche is more than just a place of worship - it is an architectural work of art with an identity-forming effect for the district and at the same time a lively place for spirituality, encounters and design. Its special architectural expression, coupled with its location in a mature residential environment, makes it a building with extraordinary potential.
