Geographically well situated, economically flourishing and historically interesting
The municipality, which was first mentioned in a document in 1075, has just under 10,000 inhabitants on the left bank of the Neckar River on the northern slope of the Neckar Valley in the Esslingen district southeast of Stuttgart. Köngen is known supra-regionally mainly because of the former Roman military camp including the adjacent ancient city of "Grinario", which existed there between about 90 BC and 300 AD. Until the turn of the century in 1900, only just over 2,000 people lived there. By the beginning of the 1950s, the population had almost doubled to over 4,000, and by 1970 to over 8,000, not least due to the influx of many displaced persons from the former German eastern territories. Since then, the community has been growing slowly but steadily, and the successful local companies in the trades, commerce, mechanical engineering and plastics processing sectors have played a significant role in making it an attractive place to live. In addition, 700 employees alone are employed at the large freight center Köngen-Göppingen of the logistics company "DHL", which was already opened there in 1995. Decisive for this was certainly also the good traffic connection of the municipality with the federal highway 313 and the federal highway 8 as well as the central location in the surrounding district Esslingen, which is with almost 520,000 inhabitants one of the most populous in Germany, has in the Stuttgart region the most employees liable to insurance and has one of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide.
Apartments are usually still quite inexpensive here, but houses are somewhat more expensive
In terms of its current real estate prices, Köngen is still relatively inexpensive compared to its directly neighboring towns and communities of Deizisau (apartments approx. 2,600 euros/m²; house price approx. 300,000 euros), Wernau am Neckar (apartments approx. 2,000 euros/m²; house price approx. 430,000 euros), Wendlingen am Neckar (apartments approx. 2,800 euros/m²; house price approx. 320,000 euros) and Unterensingen (apartments approx. 2,500 euros/m²; house price approx. 300,000 euros). Average local apartment prices of currently just over 2,000 euros/m² are below both those of the state of Baden-Württemberg (approx. 2,700 euros/m²; 335,000 euros) and the national average (approx. 2,400 euros/m² for apartments). Only the house price of slightly over 320,000 euros in Köngen is higher than that of the entire federal territory (approx. 280,000 euros). However, the municipality is even more favorable when compared with the cities of Esslingen (apartments and houses both approx. 3,000 euros/m²) and Ostfildern (approx. 3,000 and 3,900 euros/m²), which are also not far away and near Stuttgart. In view of the short distance to Stuttgart's city center of just over 25 kilometers and the sharp rise in real estate prices in the state capital (currently approx. 3,900 and 3,800 euros/m²), Köngen is thus definitely a fairly inexpensive alternative for purchasing housing in the otherwise rather expensive surrounding area.
The Roman heritage is omnipresent, but the present is also enjoyed
Köngen is also a popular and recommendable place to live with a modern and well-developed infrastructure, not only because of its price structure, but also because of its many recreational opportunities, nearby excursion destinations and interesting sights. For example, the museum "Römerpark" with the archaeological exhibition is very popular with travel groups and school classes, where in addition to the reconstructed watchtower, many finds from the excavations can be viewed. Likewise, the municipality is also the beginning or end of the vacation road "Römerstraße Neckar-Alb-Aare", which stretches from the Neckar to Lake Constance, also in Köngen begins the Lautertal-Limes, which runs through the name-giving romantic valley to Donnstetten on the Swabian Alb. Not far away and always good for a trip are also Teck Castle and the mysterious cave "Sibyllenloch" in Kirchheim unter Teck, only 12 kilometers away. Köngen Castle, dating from the late 14th century, was extensively renovated between 1992 and 2007, and the chapel, castle cellar and knights' hall can be rented for private events. Some of the rooms in the former tithe barn are also available for private rentals. The magnificent half-timbered building from 1722 houses the local library, a meeting place for senior citizens and the meeting room of the municipal council. Another historical gem is the Ulrichsbrücke bridge dating from 1,600, which today is only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Much older, however, is the Roman Jupiter Giant column at the Lorch crossing, which was found in 1964 on the site of a former estate. Seasonal highlights in Köngen's festival calendar are the Whitsun market with up to 40,000 visitors every year on Whit Monday, the smaller autumn market always on the third Sunday in September, and the summer 3K festival with rock music for a young and young-at-heart audience.
