A growing city in the middle of the economically strong Rhine-Main region

The medium-sized town in the eastern part of the Hessian district of Offenbach between Darmstadt and Frankfurt am Main currently has 37,000 inhabitants. Presumably already settled since the Mesolithic Age, the town was first mentioned in a document in 834. After the appointment as a market town in 1813, the connection to the Main-Neckar railroad followed in 1846 and in 1883 the award of the town rights. After the First and Second World Wars, Langen (Hesse) grew quite strongly in each case; between 1939 and 2009 alone, the population quadrupled from a good 9,000 to over 28,000 inhabitants. As a place to work and live, the city is attractive not only because of its proximity to the major cities in southern Hesse, but also because of the numerous local companies, primarily from the communications, information and computer industries. More than 100 companies in this field, such as Oracle, Borland, Bull Computer, Panasonic, Fujitsu, MISCO, Nikon, The Bristol Group, Polygen GmbH and the media group Vivendi Universal Publishing, have branches in the city. Administratively, Langen (Hesse) is divided into the districts of the old town in the east, the center in the middle, the Neurott commercial area in the northwest, the Nordend residential district with many apartment blocks and high-rise apartment buildings, the purely residential areas of Linden and Oberlinden in the west, and Steinberg in the southeast with new row, one-, two- and three-family houses including gardens built in the 1990s. As one of a total of 14 cities and communities, the city has been a member of the "Urban Redevelopment in Hesse" development program as a single location since December 2005.
