With around 1.6 million people living in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the state is the most sparsely populated in all of Germany. The agricultural state has only one major city: The city of Rostock, with a good 200,000 inhabitants.Thestate capital Schwerin, on the other hand, is home to only about 90,000 people, plus other smaller cities such as Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, Stralsund and Wismar.
Maritime industry and tourism shape economic life
The picturesque Baltic Sea coast and the islands of Rügen and Usedom, the Mecklenburg Lake District and many other tourist highlights attract millions of vacationers to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern year after year.
