Joy of life, humor and sociability are also very important in Grevenbroich. Witness to this are, for example, the two dozen marksmen's and local history festivals between May and October, as well as "Horst Schlämmer", the fictional character of comedian Hape Kerkeling, who is said to have come from Grevenbroich and who now enjoys cult status throughout Germany. Visitors can learn about the town's more than 700-year history at institutions such as the Villa Erckens museum on the town park island, the nearby railroad museum in Rommerskirchen-Oekoven, the Cistercian monastery in Langwaden, Hülchrath Castle and the Gustorf "Erftdom".
