Located in the very west of the Federal Republic of Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia, the municipality, which has existed in its present form since the municipal reorganization in 1975, currently has a population of just under 23,000 and is conveniently situated between the four conurbations of Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen and Mönchengladbach in the Rhine district of Neuss. It is also only a stone's throw from the Dutch and Belgian borders. The nearest cities and communities are Grevenbroich in the west, Bedburg in the south, Erkelenz in the east and the Rheydt district of Mönchengladbach in the north. There are also direct road connections to Neuss, Bergheim, Jülich, Nettetal, Viersen and Krefeld via the A 44, A 46, A 57, A 61, A 540 freeways and the B 59 federal highway. Although the area of Jüchen was already permanently settled in the Stone, Iron and Roman Ages, the first documented mention is from the late 13th century, when the then still small village belonged to the Duchy of Jülich. During its membership in the Prussian Rhine Province between 1815 and 1929, the municipality grew and prospered economically and in terms of its population, especially the textile industry that settled in the area provided attraction and prosperity. In the course of the 20th century, many companies from the agricultural, horticultural, construction and electrical industries, as well as the service sector, discovered the geographically favorable location for themselves. With the intermunicipal industrial park "Regiopark", opened in 2003, one of the largest industrial parks in the Lower Rhine region with an area of approx. 120 hectares has since been available for companies and investors.
For decades, lignite has given the community a special dynamic.
However, the regional lignite mining was to have a far greater impact than this colorful mix of industries. With the expansion of the open pit mine named after the Jüchen district of Garzweiler from 1983 onward, not only this district but also other districts fell victim to the excavators or were relocated within the community (Neu-Holz, Neu-Otzenrath, Neu-Priesterath, Neu-Spenrath). Today, in addition to these, the community consists of Aldenhoven, Bedburdyck, Damm, Dürselen, Gierath, Gubberath, Hackhausen, Herberath, Hochneukirch, Hoppers, Kamphausen, Kelzenberg, Mürmeln, Neuenhoven, Rath, Schaan, Schlich, Stessen, Waat, Wallrath and Wey. Many of these villages, which are still rural and agricultural, also have valuable and nationally known historical buildings. For example, the Dyck moated castle and the Becherhof farm in Aldenhoven, the Dyck wine house and the St. Nicholas monastery near Damm, the windmill including inn and the bear tower in Hochneukirch, the 15th-century castle and the Stammheim manor house in Gierath, the war memorial in Kelzenberg, and the churches and the former Haus Katz manor in Jüchen itself. However, modern houses have also been built and are still being built in the municipality; in addition to the "Auenfeld" and "Hans-Diekmann-Strasse" development areas, there are many other urban land-use plans, and an information telephone for housing promotion has also been set up to facilitate the arrangement of consultation appointments.
